Monroe County's Home Improvement Program (HIP) provides one-time grants and low interest loans to income-eligible homeowners for home repairs and improvements in the suburban towns and villages.

Eligible repairs include structural (roof, foundation, windows, exterior paint or siding), major systems (plumbing, heating or electrical) and accessibility accommodations (ramps, lifts, doorways, bathrooms).  Routine maintenance, remodeling and cosmetic improvements are generally not eligible repairs.

In 2018, Monroe County provided assistance to 70 homeowners throughout the suburban towns and villages in Monroe County totaling $1,262,196 at an average of $18,031 per project. These projects allow property owners the ability to maintain the value of the property and help stabilize the community. Improvements have included ADA modifications that have allowed homeowners to remain in their home, structural repairs, major systems updates, to something as simple as roof replacement.

In addition, five homeowners had solar panels installed on their roof through the mcSolar, an initiative that began in 2018 as part of our Home Improvement Program. This component of the HIP allows eligible homeowners an option to increase energy efficiency.

Depending on the cost of needed repairs and household income, you may qualify for a grant of up to $20,000.  Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.  Contact the Community Development Office at (585) 753-2000 for additional information.
